We all know that protein is important, but what does that actually mean for your breakfast bowl? Let’s look past the hype and get to the heart of what makes a high-protein breakfast such a big deal – and so delicious. With a little know-how and the right cereal, you can build a bowl that provides a powerful start to your day.
Why protein matters in the morning
Protein is an essential ingredient in building muscle mass and keeping bones healthy*. You could include a high-protein cereal in your morning meal ahead of a busy day at work. It also works as part of a post-workout refuel.
So how much protein do you really need? A healthy adult typically needs around 0.75–0.8g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, spread across meals and snacks as part of a balanced diet. How protein gets into your cereal
At Weetabix, we wanted to create a high-protein cereal that was still, at its heart, a Weetabix biscuit. That meant using the protein from our signature whole wheat, rather than adding powders from other plants like soy or peas.
So, how do you get more protein from the wheat itself? It’s a clever and surprisingly simple process. We start with whole wheat dough and gently wash it. This rinsing process removes much of the natural starch, leaving behind the concentrated wheat protein. It’s our way of boosting the protein while staying true to the original grain.
This approach is different from using highly-refined ‘isolates’. We’re simply concentrating the natural goodness we already have, which is why every bowl tastes like the Weetabix you love. To give it a light and satisfyingly crunchy texture, we also add protein-enriched crispies made from wheat and rice flour.
The result? A single two-biscuit serving with 125ml of milk gives you 12g of protein – for context, that’s the same as two large eggs – all without relying on soy. And just like other Weetabix favourites, it’s high in fibre and low in salt, sugar, and saturated fat.
Rock ‘n’ bowl: Protein toppings to supercharge your breakfast
The beauty of a high-protein cereal is how easily you can top it up with extras. Try these easy, tasty additions to turn your morning into a win:
- Greek yoghurt, berries and pumpkin seeds: creamy, tangy, and full of texture.
- Almonds or pistachios: a small handful adds crunch – and protein. Just one ounce of almonds (about 23) brings roughly 6g of extra protein.
- Peanut or almond butter and sliced banana: sweet, satisfying and fibre-friendly.
- Chia or flax seeds: tiny seeds, mighty upgrade.
