Allergy & special diet

Which of your products are suitable for a Halal diet?

Please refer to our lists of suitability for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Where whey powder is used as an ingredient, it is appropriate for vegetarians.

Where products contain a flavour it may be on an alcohol carrier, albeit at low level or alcohol may have been used in the manufacture of the flavour.

Any flavour/flavouring will be detailed in ingredients lists.

You may also wish to contact your religious leader for verification of suitability of these products.

Which of your products are soya ingredient free?

Many products in our range are soya ingredient free. Click here to view the suitability of all our products

Which of your products are suitable for a Coeliac diet?

All our products contain gluten from either wheat, barley or oats. Click here for a full list of our products.

Our oat based breakfast cereal, Ready brek may be suitable for some Coeliacs depending on their tolerance to oats.

Ready brek hot oat cereals do not contain any wheat or barley ingredients.

Oatibix biscuits and Oatibix flakes are wheat ingredient free but they contain malted barley extract and are produced on a line on which Weetabix and other wheat based flakes are made. Of course, the lines are cleaned thoroughly between production runs.

Weetabix Oaty Bars contain wheat, oat and barley.

If you want to enjoy the benefit of oats we recommend you discuss this fully with your GP or dietician before doing so. This is because some coeliacs, and others with wheat intolerance, may be sensitive to pure oats. In addition, all oat products can contain small quantities of other grains such as wheat and/or barley.

What age can I give Weetabix or Ready brek to my child?

Weetabix, Ready brek and Oatibix are not suitable for infants under six months, and are not produced specifically for infants or young children.

The Department of Health recommends you use mashed up family foods when possible.

Cow's milk is not suitable until 12 months and sugar and salt are not to be added. Ready brek Original contains no added sugar or salt. Weetabix and Oatibix are low in sugar and salt. Each Weetabix biscuit has less than 1g of sugar and only contains 0.05g of salt (1 Weetabix = approx. 19g). Each Oatibix biscuit has less than 1g of sugar and contains 0.07g of salt (1 Oatibix = approx. 24g). Your child will probably eat less than one full Weetabix or Oatibix to begin with. If given once weaning has been established, they should be mixed with the child's usual milk.

If you have any questions about feeding your child, please ask your midwife, health visitor or GP.

You may also like to visit the NHS website for advice on weaning your baby onto solid foods.

Healthy eating

What is the maximum number of Weetabix I can eat every day?

The key to a healthy diet is balance. No one food provides all the nutrients (food components) you need for health. Therefore, by eating a variety of foods in appropriate amounts you can achieve the balance you need.

Weetabix is an ideal food from a healthy eating point of view as it is low in fat, high in fibre and low in sugar. It provides an excellent breakfast and an ideal snack any time of the day, including bedtime. However, balance is the key, and you can have too much of a good thing. Weetabix is fortified with certain vitamins and minerals and if eaten to excess, then you could be taking in too much of these nutrients.

We would recommend that an adult eats no more than four (4) Weetabix biscuits per day. Taking this amount will leave room for you to eat other foods and have some variety in your diet.

For advice regarding children's intake, please contact your health visitor or GP.

Which of your products contain Folic Acid?

Folic acid is important for normal cell development and healthy blood and helps with normal maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.

Good sources of folate include fortified breakfast cereals, leafy green vegetables and orange juice. Click here to see a list of our products that contain Folic Acid.

Why do you add salt and sugar to your cereals?

Salt and sugar are added to cereals to aid cooking, texture and taste. The salt and sugar levels of our cereals are regularly monitored to make sure only the minimum amounts are used to give the maximum effect.

A two biscuit serving of Weetabix contains one fiftieth of a teaspoon of salt (0.1g), 1.7% of the FSA's suggested daily salt intake.
Each Weetabix contains one hundredth of a teaspoon of salt (0.05g), 0.8% of the FSA's suggested daily salt intake.
A two biscuit serving of Weetabix contains less than half a teaspoon of sugar (1.7g).
Each Weetabix contains less than a fifth of a teaspoon of sugar (0.9g).

Ready brek Original contains no added salt or sugar.

Why fortify cereals?

We produce a range of breakfast cereals, bars and drinks to suit our varied customer's needs.

Where we fortify products it makes a valuable contribution to our vitamin and mineral intake.

Corporate & environment

What are your packaging materials made of?

You may be aware of an updated EFSA (European Food Standards agency) paper published on 28th Aug 2013. The report confirms that Mineral oils can be used as solvents in inks for printing newspapers and magazines and that newspapers can be present in recycled board. This report stated that the industry-wide issue could potentially affect any food products using recycled board containing newspaper.

Whilst the board we used was considered by the UK Food standards Agency to be safe we have elected to eliminate any cause for concern whatsoever and have chosen to change our packaging.

We are pleased to share with you that we have sourced new cardboard to eliminate any doubt that mineral hydrocarbons could be contained within our packaging.

In addition to this, we were guided by the UK Food Standards Agency whose current advice is that there are no immediate health concerns.

Weetabix takes great care to minimise any risk by ensuring the inks used to print our packaging do not contain mineral hydrocarbons and are safe for use on food packaging. Our cardboard packaging is, of course, recyclable.

We do hope that you like the new packaging and understand our reason for change. We look forward to you enjoying your Weetabix for many years to come.

Can your packaging be recycled?

All our packaging now contains on-pack recycling logos to help you identify which parts you can recycle and which are not currently recycled. Our cardboard cartons are widely recycled by local councils as part of their kerbside collection schemes. These are often turned into more cardboard, although some councils compost the cartons instead. At the moment our plastic-based packaging is not recycled by many local councils. The inner bags used for most of our cereals can be recycled with shopping bags at larger retailers. We are however, working closely with a number of organisations and our suppliers to improve the recycling of these materials.

You can find out more about recycling in your area by visiting recyclenow which provides useful information to help you recycle your packaging and explains how on-pack recycling logos work.

Do any of your products contain GMOs?

All ingredients supplied to Weetabix Ltd and all products produced by Weetabix Ltd are free of Genetically Modified (GM) material and are not derived from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as defined in the regulations on GM food and feed ((EC) 1829/2003) and the regulations on traceability and labelling of GMOs and products produced from GMOs ((EC) 1830/2003)
